Effects of Surface Heating on Coastal Upwelling Intensity

نویسندگان

چکیده

Numerical experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of surface heating on coastal upwelling intensity. Offshore transport, isopycnal slope, and sea temperature (SST) difference between offshore regions, which represent intensity, estimated. Surface decreases Ekman transport but increases pumping by changing air-sea stability conditions. However, does not change significantly with heating. Our experimental results revealed that increase in slope SST difference. Both are closely related boundary layer (SBL). Strong thins surface-mixed layer, vertical eddy viscosity. The decreased viscosity SBL enhances its velocity. weakens because thin SBL, while becomes stronger enhanced velocity despite same transport. present study may be relevant systems as under future global warming.

The effect of changes in surface winds and ocean stratification on coastal upwelling and sea surface temperatures in the Pliocene

Sea surface temperature (SST) in subtropical eastern boundary upwelling zones is shown to be affected by three main factors: large-scale ocean stratification, upwelling-favorable sea surface wind stress, and the surface concentration (baroclinicity) of the alongshore pressure gradient driving the incoming geostrophic flow which balances the Ekman surface outflow. Pliocene-aged SST proxies sugge...

Effects of stratification and shelf slope on nutrient supply in coastal upwelling regions

[1] An idealized, two‐dimensional numerical modeling study is presented to investigate the effects of variable shelf slope and stratification on surface mixed layer (SML) nutrient supply during upwelling. As reported previously, the physical flow regime is governed by a topographic Burger number. Gradual shelf slope and weak stratification concentrate onshore transport in the bottom boundary la...

Coastal upwelling in a warmer future

[1] Coastal upwelling helps set the physical context for marine ecosystems, and upwelling zones are among the most productive regions of the global ocean. Unlike earlier models, two state-of-the-art climate models exhibit little change during the next century in the magnitude and seasonality of coastal upwelling, but climate models are still probably not sufficiently developed (for example, the...
